A Bit About Me

Alisha H. Wilkes, CD

I trained as a birth doula through Seattle Midwifery School in September of 2001. I am certified through Pacific Association of Labor Support (PALS) and Doulas of North America (DONA). I am also a trained Whole Birth Prenatal Yoga Educator and Lactation Educator.

I believe women and families deserve to be supported and empowered throughout the sacred, life changing events of pregnancy and childbirth. I work to facilitate the bonding of women to their partners, families, and newborns thru empowering them to make the decisions they believe in based on inherent wisdom, knowledge, and education. Every woman is different, thus every pregnancy and birth are different. I consider it my job to acknowledge and support these differences, tailoring my services to each individual’s needs and dreams.

I have attended homebirths with midwives, including water birth, as well as hospital births with OB’s and Midwives. I find I work well in a variety of situations, with a variety of people. One of my biggest strengths is flexibility, which comes in handy as a doula, because as much as one is prepared, birth is an organic and uncontrollable event. I find each birth I attend is ultimately unique, as are all of those involved. I enjoy this variety and feel I am able to access knowledge from previous experiences as well as develop new ideas and techniques as I go.

I am a wife and mother of two. Both of my pregnancies were considered high risk due to diabetes and PIH (Pregnancy induced hypertention). My first labor and birth was difficult. I developed toxemia, was induced at 37 weeks, and had many interventions, including forceps and an episitomy after four hours of pushing and a night of no sleep. It was this difficult experience that convinced me we as women needed something more than we were getting during pregnancy and childbirth. My second labor and birth were much better. I spent my pregnancy armoring my self with knowledge. My friend served as my doula. I practiced visualization and advocated for myself throughout my pregnancy. Due to my diabetes I was required to birth in a hospital with an ob/gyn, but I maintained confidence in my ability to create the best birth experience possible. My daughter was born after a 6 hour labor with no interventions or complications. Because of my very different personal childbirth experiences, and continuing experience supporting families during labor, I feel I have a broad, personal base to draw on when helping families in many different situations.
